Enduring Understandings

In my work over the past six years, what I've come to know for certain is that all learning should begin with the big ideas...the enduring understandings that help give meaning and lasting importance to our lives. By establishing enduring understandings, we will avoid the pitfalls of spending too much time on insignificant information and missing the true essence of what we need to carry us brilliantly through our lives. So, here are the enduring understandings I've crafted for this experience.

Enduring Understanding(s):

  • The world we live in is changing at an unprecedented pace; how we educate must reflect how our students learn and the world in which our students will emerge.

  • Learning is no longer restricted to an event bound by space and time.

Essential Question(s):

  • What are the shifts in personal learning made possible by networked, connected technologies?

  • What are the spaces in which we can learn, how are they different from those of the past and how can they transform learning?

Our Spaces for Learning

Our spaces for learning will be varied to accommodate individual learning styles, busy schedules and the best way to share learning. Here is what you can expect:

1.) Face-to-face (f2f)

Getting ready for the journey

There are some important tools that will make for a smoother journey. These include:

  • Symbaloo

  • Diigo

  • Twitter

Bi-Weekly Meet-Up

We'll get together every other week for various reasons, including a book study, learning new tools, sharing resources and just simply supporting each other.

Sharing Our Learning

This will be a culminating session where we'll share some of our artifacts of our journey.

2.) Elluminate

These sessions will be scheduled weekly and may include sessions focused on...

  • introduction of new tools

  • expert voices

3.) Web-based media

You will spend a great deal of time online...

  • reading articles, blog posts,

  • building your personal learning network

  • reflecting in your chosen space

  • sharing your learning with our community

If you are not participating in this experience for graduate credit, you can choose to attend any of the face-to-face, Elluminate and Web-based media meetings as you wish. You will build your own learning experiences. Keep in mind that the amount of growth you experience will be directly related to how much you invest in the experience.
